Pou Tangaroa (God and protector of the sea) at Pukerua Bay, near Wellington, New Zealand

This carving was completed by craftsman carver, Hermann Salzmann, with help from other Ngati Toa carvers. This magnificent pou is 6 meters high, is carved from macrocarpa, and weighs over two tonnes. The Pou Tangaroa was unveiled and blessed at a dawn ceremony on 1 December 2012.
