Moon rises over the beautiful Festival of Lights at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth

Each summer, the TSB Festival of Lights transforms New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park into a brilliant illuminated spectacle of multi-coloured lights. This 7-week free event attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year.

Ideally, a low-light image like this should be taken with the camera on a tripod. But, that night, I didn’t have my tripod with me, so I took the image hand-held by pushing up the ISO to a high 25,600. This enabled me to set my 42 megapixel full frame Sony A7R II camera to 1/80 second at F/2.8, using the Sony FE 35mm F/2.8 lens.

To obtain the best appreciation of the quality of the images on this site, they should be displayed at a relatively small size, because each image has been reduced in size to a maximum width of only 870 pixels, from the original width of at least 4900 pixels (or at least 6000 pixels from my full frame cameras). In addition, the images have been saved at a low quality setting.
